BTOP In Action
Keeble Early Childhood/Pre-K Center
On February 24th 2011 President and Executive Director, Carlos J. López, visited with students during the beginning of their course semester at Keeble Early Childhood/Pre-K Center. These kinds of meetings allow him to encourage them and share what MIGH is all about, to enrich the lives of Hispanic adults for a better tomorrow through education. They also provide an avenue to hear about student experiences with the program, semester goals, and what they hope to gain. This particular group consists of mostly young moms striving to learn how to use a computer system, a skill that could open many opportunities from helping with homework and better supervising their children to personal and career growth.

Beaumont, TX- St. Anne's Catholic School
On May 28th 2011 President and Executive Director, Carlos J. López, had the opportunity to visit with soon-to-be graduates of the Mexican Institute of Greater Houston's Basic Computer Technology and Application course at the St. Anne's Catholic School in Beaumont, TX. The course strengthens the skills of Hispanic adults which represent a large segment of the workforce in the area. Once again, Mr. López was able to encourage the group to continue on their path of education and success while learning about their personal experiences and goals. The MIGH counts on the help and willingness of dedicated instructors, tutors, schools, and other partners for its Community Learning Centers (CLC’s) to make the courses available in cities outside the greater Houston area—such as Beaumont and San Antonio. Ms. Carmen Alvarez, pictured below, standing on the right, is the longtime representative and instructor for MIGH in Beaumont where the student groups continue to grow. Program expansion is expected to continue now that MIGH has received funding under the economic stimulus package of the U.S. Government.
President & Executive Director, Carlos J. López, reiterating MIGH’s commitment to its mission and the importance of the support the students receive through MIGH from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP). This program is directly helping improve the lives of Hispanics through education. Many parents expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to increase their working skills which allows them to present living examples to their children about the vital link between education and prosperity.
Students from St. Anne’s Catholic School share their experiences and thoughts about the MIGH Basic Computer Technology and Application course. Three couples (husband and wife) have attended this course. Several mothers expressed their gratitude for having received this training and plan to encourage other Hispanic adults to attend the next course in Beaumont. They also requested notification of when the new 2nd level classes are going to be offered so that they could attend.
